WHAT I BREED TOWARDS
My goal is to breed versatile, healthy Border Collies. While there may be some variations in goals across different litters, the ultimate objective remains consistent: to aim for strong, healthy, well-balanced, and courageous Border Collies. Being a versatile breed, Border Collies exhibit individual differences, but the overarching aim is to breed dogs that excel in various sports. I hold a deep affection for this breed and am committed to doing everything within my power to nurture and enhance its qualities.
I desire my Border Collies to possess a resilient nature, capable of enduring moderate pressure from the handler without getting stressed. While I do not breed for overly sensitive Border Collies, it is essential to acknowledge that a certain degree of sensitivity is inherent in this breed, and it should not be entirely eliminated.
Good nerves is the paramount focus of my breeding goals, ensuring that the dog can live normal everyday life even when there may not be so much training around. I firmly believe that a dog can effortlessly adapt to daily life, even if it has remarkable power for sports. Attaining a strong on-off switch is an incredibly vital characteristic, although I acknowledge training also plays a role in there.
I never breed for looks, but I appreciate dogs that possess a balanced, tough, and agile appearance. I don't want to breed towards any extremes and hope that my puppies will be normal looking basic dogs without anything exaggerated. We should strive to stay true to the breed's origins. (Like Wiston Cap and Old Hemp.) Balanced structure will help the dog in the long run and will manifest as beautiful jumping technique, fast turns and powerful working ability. Dog must be nice to look at and it's movement needs to be effortless and beautiful.
I think it is crucial to preserve natural instinct in border collies, even tough I don't breed towards pure herding lines. Both my dogs have herding line ancestry and all my breeding dogs will be tested on sheep at least once.
I love dogs that are greedy for food and have strong play drive. It is my sincere hope that my puppies will possess an inherent eagerness to work with their people, embodying the true spirit of Border Collies. A high prey drive holds tremendous significance as it greatly contributes to success in various sports.
CHOOSING THE PARENTS
Every dog I select for breeding undergoes meticulous scrutiny and thorough health testing. All of my breeding dogs have their hips, shoulders, and eyes evaluated at the minimum, and often additional assessments are conducted, such as spinal evaluations. I refrain from using dogs for breeding if their close relatives have a history of OCD or epilepsy.
I am dedicated to acquiring comprehensive knowledge about the pedigrees, hereditary diseases, and potential risks associated with breeding my dogs. To facilitate this, I have created a detailed Sheets- chart encompassing all available health information regarding my breeding dogs and their relatives. However, it is essential to understand that not all information may be accessible, and it is impossible to possess complete health data for every dog. Despite my regular checks on the health results of my breeding dog's relatives, the chart may not always be up to date, resulting in occasional minor inaccuracies. If you happen to possess knowledge of any health risks concerning my breeding dogs that are not listed in the provided format, I kindly request you to inform me so that I can address the situation promptly. Sharing information is of utmost importance for breeders to make informed breeding choices, and I hope that other breeders can also benefit from the valuable information I have collected.
My goal is to use only balanced and cooperative dogs for breeding. I prioritize breeding dogs that have proven themselves in at least one sport, although I don't necessarily require them to actively compete. I place trust in the owners' assessment of their dogs. It's important to note that a good stud may not always excel in competitions, and the best competition dogs may not always make the best studs. The nature the puppies will inherit is unpredictable, making it impossible to guarantee specific outcomes from a litter. Therefore, I never make promises that my puppies will become future sports stars.
I aim to use dogs that possess strong character and can overcome obstacles. It is crucial to me that the dogs have a high drive and can handle distractions effectively. I highly value dogs that exhibit ease in everyday life, knowing that training is just small part of dogs life. Furthermore, dogs that are not sensitive to sounds or surfaces are of great importance to me. I never breed dogs that struggle to face basic thing that are part or every day living.
I cherish diversity in my breeding program as I am not inclined towards extensive inbreeding. Unfortunately, there tends to be a considerable amount of repeating dogs within the Border Collie lines. While using certain dogs with numerous offspring can contribute to predictability, overusing the same lines in rarely necessary.
I refrain from using studs that have already sired more than three litters or that are planned to be used a lot. While I certainly value the production of healthy offspring, I do not feel compelled to rely on "trending studs" in my breeding program. Instead, I prefer to work with inexperienced males over dogs that have already fathered many litters. Furthermore, I never breed dogs that are under three years old, typically favoring older males for breeding.
I consider it of utmost importance that dogs are able to breed naturally, without excessive human intervention. While the female can be securely held during mating to ensure the safety of the male, I firmly believe in minimizing assistance throughout the process, even if both dogs are breeding for the first time. I staunchly oppose any form of coercion or excessive interference when the goal is to produce a litter. The female is only introduced to the male during the appropriate days, and if things are not progressing as expected, the plans can be postponed, tried again later, or an alternative stud can be considered. I firmly believe that no combination is worth forcing, as I trust that nature will guide us if the pairing is not suitable.
RESPONSIBILITY
Unfortunate health results should never be attributed to the fault of the owners. It is simply an unfortunate outcome of the genetic lottery. I strive to maintain a strong connection with all puppy owners and provide support throughout every aspect of the dog's life. Every puppy I have bred holds equal significance to me, regardless of their achievements in sports. I never place blame on puppy owners in the event of unfavorable health outcomes or character issues. Instead, I always endeavor to offer them all the support within my capacity. I make it a point to publish all health information, both positive and negative, without any concealment or omission.
If an owner ever finds themselves in the unfortunate situation of needing to rehome a dog I have bred, I want them to know that I'm always able to take dog back to me.
TO WHOM
I only place puppies in active and goal-oriented homes. While competing is not a required, homes that have some specific goals given priority. I firmly believe that the Border Collie is not ideally suited to a sedentary lifestyle, where they are limited to basic walks and occasional ball chasing. These dogs truly thrive when their innate qualities and abilities are utilized to the fullest extent. It is important to emphasize that all puppies I have bred are expected to be cherished as beloved family members, rather than mere tools for competition that are forgotten if they do not succeed or experience health issues. If you are primarily seeking a basic family pet, I kindly suggest reaching out to other breeders or considering a different breed that better aligns with your preferences.
While I typically do not sell to breeders, I am open to considering it if our values align and there is an opportunity for collaboration in breeding decisions.
KASVATUSTYÖNI TAVOITE
Tavoitteenani on kasvattaa monipuoliseen harrastamiseen soveltuvia terveitä bordercollieita. Tavoite voi vaihdella hieman pentuekohtaisesti, mutta pääsääntönä pidän, että jalostan kohti voimakasta, tervettä, tasapainoista ja rohkeaa bordercollieta. Bordercollie on monipuolinen rotu ja yksilöidenkin väliltä voi löytyä joitain eroja, mutta päämäärä on aina yksi ja sama: Monipuolinen harrastuskoira lajiin kuin lajiin. Rotu on minulle todella rakas ja pyrin tekemään kaikkeni tämän upean rodun eteen.
Mielestäni bordercollie saa olla hieman kova ja sillä tulee olla selkärankaa kestää omistajan asettamaa painetta ilman, että se menettää hermojaan. En siis jalosta erityisen herkkiä bordercollieita, vaikkakin normaalia botsuihin liittyvää herkyyttä tietysti kuuluu löytyä.
Hyvä hermorakenne on kasvatustyössäni avainasemassa, jotta koira osaa elää myös rentoa arkea ja kestää myös hiljaisemmat treenikaudet. Mielestäni koira pystyy olemaan arjessa helppo ja mukava, vaikka siitä löytyisikin paljon tykkiä harrastuksiin. Hyvä rauhoittumiskyky on jalostuksessa tärkeä huomioitava asia, vaikkakin tiedän sen olevan osaltaan myös koulutuskysymys.
En kasvata koiria koskaan ulkonäkö edellä, mutta minulle on tärkeää, että koira on rakenteeltaan tasapainoinen, kestävä ja notkea. En halua jalostaa kohti mitään ääripäätä ja toivonkin, että omat kasvattini olisivat "normaalin" näköisiä peruspiskejä ilman mitään liioiteltua. Rotu ei saisi ulkonäöllisesti ajautua liian kauas alkuperästään. (kuten Wiston Capista and Old Hempistä) Tasapainoinen rakenne kantaa pitkälle esimerkiksi agilityssä, missä se näkyy kauniina hyppytekniikkana, nopeina käännöksinä ja vahvana työskentelynä. Koiraa täytyy olla ilo katsella ja sen liikkeen tulee olla vaivatonta ja kaunista.
Minulle on tärkeää säilyttää bordercollieille luontaiset paimennusominaisuudet, vaikka en kasvatakkaan puhdasta paimenlinjaa. Molempien koirieni takaa löytyy paimentavia sukuja ja pidänkin tärkeänä, että koiralla on kyky suoriutua myös luontaisista työtehtävistään. Pyrinkin että kaikki jalostukseen käyttämäni koirat olisivat käyneet ainakin kerran lampailla.
Arvostan ruoalle ahneita ja leluhulluja koiria. Toivon, että kasvattini olisivat helposti palkattavia, kuten bordercollien kuuluukin olla ja ne olisivat valmiita töihin oli palkka mikä hyvänsä. Korkea saalisvietti on siis erityisen tärkeä ja se antaa paljon potkua tekemiseen kaikissa lajeissa.
VANHEMPIEN VALINTA
Jokainen jalostukseen käyttämäni koira on laajasti terveystutkittu. Kaikki jalostukseen käyttämäni koirat noudattavat PEVISA-ohjelmaa ja on mahdollisuuksien mukaan myös laajemmin terveytutkittu (esim selkä). En käytä koiraa mikäli sen sisaruksilla tai muulla lähisuvulla on jotain bordercollieiden vitsauksia kuten OCD tai epilepsia.
Haluan olla mahdollisimman perillä jalostuskoirieni suvusta, perinnöllisistä sairauksista ja mahdollisista riskeistä. Jokaisesta jalostuskoirasta olen tehnyt kaikkien tarkasteltavissa olevan Sheets-tiedoston, missä jalostukseen käyttämieni koirien sukulaisten terveystietoja on koottu yksinkertaiseen taulukkomuotoon. Huomioithan, että kaikki tieto ei ole saatavilla, eikä kaikista koirista välttämättä löydy lainkaan tietoa. Tieto ei välttämättä myöskään ole aina ajantasalla, vaikka seuraankin aktiivisesti terveystuloksia. Joitain aukkoja siis varmasti löytyy. Mikäli tiedät jalostuskoirieni suvuista lisää, etkä löydä sitä taulukostani, kerrothan siitä minulle niin voidaan korjata tilanne! Kaikki tieto on arvokasta kasvattajalle kasvatustyötä varten ja toivon, että keräämäni tieto voi auttaa myös muita kasvattajia heidän jalostusvalinnoissaan.
Jalostukseen käyttämiltäni koirilta odotan tasapainoista ja yhteistyöhaluista luonnetta. Haluan, että ne on testattu toimiviksi vähintään yhdessä lajissa, en kuitenkaan edellytä kilpailutuloksia ja luotan omistajan sanaan ja luonnekuvaukseen. Hyvä periyttäjä ei aina korreloi kilpailumenestyksen kanssa, eikä luonne ei ole suoraviivaisesti ennustettavissa pennuille. Kisamenestyjää en koskaan lupaa yhdestäkään pennusta.
Toivon jalostuskoiriltani vahvaa luonnetta ja hieman paksumpaa nahkaa kestää elämän kolhuja. Minulle on tärkeää, että jalostukseen käyttämitäni koirilta löytyy suhteellisen paljon moottoria ja ne kestävät myös ympäristön häiriöitä hyvin. Suosin arjessa helppoja koiria, sillä treenaaminen on vain yksi osa koiran elämää. Myös ääni- ja alustavarmuus on tärkeää, enkä koskaan käytä koiraa jalostukseen, jolla on haasteita kohdata normaaliin elämään kuuluvia asioita.
Haluan vaalia kasvatustyössäni monimuotoisuutta, enkä mielelläni suosi suurta sukusiitosta. Bordercollieiden taustalta kylläkin löytyy harmillisen paljon toistuvia linjoja. Tietyt linjat toki lisäävät ennustettavuutta ja usein niiden ympäriltä löytyy rutkasti jälkeläisnäyttöä arvioitavaksi.
En käytä urosta jalostukseen, mikäli sillä on yli kolme pentuetta tai sitä suunnitellaan massajalostettavan. Arvostan toki tervettä jälkeläisnäyttöä, mutta en koe tarvetta käyttää kasvatustyössäni ns. "muotiuroksia". Käytänkin siis ennemmin ensikertalaista, kuin monen pentueen isää. En koskaan käytä alle 3-vuotiasta koiraa ja pyrin mahdollisuuksien mukaan hieman reippaampaan ikään.
Minulle on äärimmäisen tärkeää, että koira pystyy astumaan luonnollisesti ja ilman ihmisen turhaa hääräystä. Tietysti narttua pidetään nalkin tullen kiinni ihan uroksen turvallisuuden vuoksi, mutta muuten kosiomenojen tulee hoitua luonnollisesti, myös ensikertalaisilla. Minkäänlainen pakottaminen tai ylenpalttinen avustaminen ei mielestäni ole hyväksyttävää, mikäli pentue on tarkoitus saada aluille. Narttu viedäänkin uroksen luo vain, kun päivät ovat kohdallaan, ja jos hommat ei suju laitetaan yhdistelmä jäihin, yritetään myöhemmin uudestaan tai vaihdetaan urosta. Mikään yhdistelmä ei ole pakottamisen arvoinen ja uskon että luonto tietää jos yhdistelmä ei olekaan oikea.
VASTUU
Ikävät terveystulokset eivät ole pennunostajan syy, vaan geeniloton epäonnisia asioita. Haluan olla yhteydessä jokaiseen pennunostajaan ja tarjota tukea kaikissa koiran elämän vaiheissa. Jokainen kasvattini on minulle yhtä arvokas tekivät ne sitten tulosta tai eivät. En koskaan syytä pennunomistajaa ikävistä terveystuloksista tai luonneongelmista, vaan pyrin parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla tukemaan myös tällaisissa elämän kolhuissa. Julkaisen kaikki tehdyt terveystulokset, enkä tietenkään piilottelee ikäviä yllätyksiä.
Jos omistajalla koskaan tulee sellainen tilanne, ettei pentua voida pitää, otan miellellään pennun takaisin.
KENELLE
Pennut myydään vain aktiivisiin ja tavoitteellisiin koteihin. En vaadi kodeilta kisaamista, mutta kisaavat kodit ovat etusijalla. Mielestäni bordercollie ei sovi kotikoiraksi pelkkään lenkkeilyyn ja touhuamiseen. Koira on onnellisimmillaan kun sille jalostetut ominaisuudet pääsevät todella käyttöön. Tietysti oletan, että jokainen jalostamani koira on myös rakastettu perheenjäsen, eikä pelkkä kilpailuväline, joka unohtuu jos se ei menesty tai terveys prakaa. Jos etsit pelkkää kotikoiraa tai lenkkikaveria ohjaan sinut muille kasvattajille tai harkitsemaan jotain muuta rotua.
Jokaisesta pentueesta on tarkoitus jättää vähintään yksi sijoitus, -leasing tai yhteistyöpentu, mikäli en jätä pentueesta itselleni koiraa. Voin harkita pennun myyntiä kasvattajalle vain siinä tapauksessa, että arvomaailmamme kohtaavat ja voimme tehdä yhteistyötä jalostusvalinnoissa.
